Yuzovo (Donetsk)

The town of Yuzuvo has had a number of names and since 1961 is called Donetsk.
Historical names: Aleksandrovska, Yuzivka, Stalin, Stalino.

Donetsk is a major city of the Donbas region, and since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 it has been the scene of major combat.

The name Yuzivka was derived from the name of a Welsh businessman, John Hughes, who made major investments in the area in 1869. It was renamed Stalin officially in 1924, though local usage probably lagged the official change. The modern name was adopted at a period of widespread de-Stalinization.
